Abstract

8306. Formby, J. April 3. Sluice gates. - To prevent river estuaries &c. from silting up, one or more lines w, x, y, z of gates are erected obliquely to or parallel with the channel to be formed or preserved. These gates allow the tide to flow over a large area but restrict the ebb to certain channels. The gates a may be slung at the top on pivots c supported by piles b, and may be provided with buffers f and with false gates g for protection.
