835,270. Knitting-machines; knitted fabrics. MACQUEEN, K. G. Aug. 19, 1957 [Aug. 20, 1956], No. 25433/56. Class 74 (2). [Also in Group XL (b)] A parallel or straight-bar knitting-machine has electrical means for widening or narrowing courses and performing other operations. Needle pattern control units 18 comprise photoelectric scanning devices 20 reading perforated tapes, and select one of three clutches 23 so that the needle either knits, tucks or is inactive. Each clutch consists of a disc 109 with a striker 107 (Fig. 10); the disc is made to rotate so that the striker moves the needle jack into the corresponding position by electromagnets 114 being actuated to bring disc 109 into contact with flange 113 on continuously rotating shaft 112. The cam carriage 4 is driven by a motor 6 controlled by a digital-analogue comparator 7 which compares a selected resistance picked by the instructions on a second tape, and read by a reader 9, with the resistance in a variable potentiometer 10 which is proportional to the distance of the cam carriage 4 from its end position, and determines the distance the carriage shall move so that when it stops the two resistances are equal. Electronic counting tubes may be used instead of the comparator. The second tape also gives instructions for units 12, 13, 14, 11 which select yarn, control stitch lengths, control cam carriage speed and perform various miscellaneous operations respectively. The yarn tension may be kept constant by a constant torque motor which feeds the yarn of the pirn. A number of slave knitting-machines can be connected to a master control unit by means of multi-wire cables and plug-in connections. The master control unit consists of an operation control reader, one or more needle pattern serial readers and a retransmission unit. Three-dimensional fashioning of garments is possible on the above machine, the desired shape being imparted by operating course-bycourse selected and variable numbers of needles.
