[Class 74 (ii)] Relates to the production of patterned goods, e.g., with tuck or purl patterns or racked effects, in a type of knitting machine in which a single needle at a time effects a knitting movement before the next needle starts its knitting movement and is selected individually according to the pattern required. The preferably annular needle bed 1 i is radially tricked and slides circumferentially along a fixed plate 2. The sliding needles 4 are bearded at one end and latched at the other. When purl knitting is to be done the working needle is pushed out of the bed 1 into a bed or guide plate 9 by a jack 13 driven by a slide 12 and lever 11 from a cam 10 on a driving shaft 29. Another cam 15 on the same shaft, through connections 16, 17 drives a lever 18, which takes the needle further within the guide 9 by engaging the beard 7. 'Another cam 19 acts on a bell-crank lever 20 for the purpose of adjusting the length of loop by limiting the stroke of the needle 4. The thread guide 21 is actuated by means of a cam 22 and a bell-crank 23. Another cam acts on a presser 24, Fig. 5. The bed 1 is provided with a number of needles corresponding to the width of the fabric to be knitted and is first adjusted so that the first needle 4 to be operated faces the guide plate 9. When the needle has terminated a knitting movement, the bed is displaced through one or several divisions in either direction and the operation starts again. The lever 18 and the presser 24 are under jacquard control. The needle bed need not be curved.
