834,546. Broaching. WEATHERLEY OILGEAR Ltd. Aug. 3, 1956 [Aug. 17, 1955], No. 23744/55. Class 83 (3). In a broaching-machine, the work-table shuttles in and out of operative position and means are provided to apply a force to the table at an acute angle to clamp it to the lower guides during cutting. The machine has a tool-slide 1, Fig. 1, a frame 2 and a compound work-table 3, 4. The table 3 slides between guides 5, 7, Figs. 2 and 3. Guides 10, 11, Fig. 2, define an inclined traverse slot 12 engaged by a crank-pin 13 on a shaft 15. The crank-shaft is hydraulically rotated by a rack 19 engaging pinion teeth 18. The crank-pin reciprocates the table 3 to and from cutting position and the forward position of the table is accurately fixed by micro-stops 21 engaging face 22. The crank is arranged to be near dead-centre position when the table engages the stops. A downward force is thus applied by the crank-pin to the table when in operative position to take up play in the guides during cutting on upward or downward strokes. The Specification states that the crank motion may be replaced by a toggle motion, or by hydraulic means.
