In the machine claimed in Claim 2 of the parent Specification one or more of all the tools adapted to operate on the work in one direction of movement are omitted from the broach-bar, to permit at least one idle stroke in a cycle of operation. In a machine for broaching a slot in a turbine rotor rim 8, the work is moved transversely by hydraulic means 6, 7 while the broach bar 1 is reciprocated by hydraulic means 4. The broach P<SP>3</SP> may be omitted and the broaches P, P<SP>1</SP>, P<SP>2</SP> cut all in the same direction, the work 8 being moved to position D for each idle stroke. In a modified cycle, broaches P, P<SP>1</SP> may operate successively all round the work, which is indexed after every two cuts, the final cut in each slot being taken by the broach P<SP>2</SP> while the work is indexed round a second time. Other cycles are described in which different broaches are omitted.
