A broaching-machine comprises two broaches A, B mounted in a holder to cut on opposite strokes, and alternately brought into operative position by relative transverse movement of the broach-holder and a work-holder 22. The broach-slide 12 is reciprocated mechanically or hydraulically. The work W is mounted on a stud 16 on a holder 20 angularly adjustable on a slide 22 movable vertically by a fluid-operated piston between stops 34, 35. The work is clamped by a fluid-operated device 55 acting through a wedge 50 and a bar carrying a clamping head 42. In operation, a switch is closed to clamp the work W. Downward movement of the wedge 50 operates a switch to start a motor for traversing the slide 12 through rack-and-pinion gearing. The slide 12 moves to the left and the broach A takes a roughing-cut. At the end of its movement, the slide actuates a switch to release the clamp 42. As the wedge 50 moves upwardly it actuates a switch to lower the slide 22. At its lower position, the slide 22 actuates a switch to return the slide 12 so that the broach B takes a finishing cut. During the latter cut, the clamp is not engaged, as the cutting force holds the work steady. At the end of the cut, the slide 12 actuates a switch to raise the slide 22 and to cause the work to be indexed by a solenoidoperated pawl-and-ratchet device. The clamp 42 is also re-engaged and the cycle continues until a switch is automatically operated to stop the machine.
