[Also in Division B3] A welding machine has devices at least one of which is adjustable during welding for oscillating the welding head in two directions. The welding head is mounted in a slide 51 movable on rods 53, 54, fixed to a frame 57, alidable on rods 58, 59 secured in a supporting plate 30. Variable throw eccentrics 55, 60, mounted on the frame 57 and plate 30 respectively and reciprocating the slide 51 and frame 57 are adjustable to produce linear elliptical or circular movements of the welding head 33. The pin 80 of each eccentrics 55, 60 is fixed on a block 81 slidable in a transverse slot 85 in a cover 99 secured in a recess in a gear 103. The throw is adjusted by means of a sleeve 91 rotatably mounted on the gear 103 and in threaded engagement with a pin 88 having an inclined slot 89 in sliding engagement with an inclined projection on the block 81. The gears 103 are driven by a flexible drive. In an alternative construction for either or both of the eccentrics 55, 60 the pin 88h, Fig. 8, is spring-loaded and is actuated through lever 112 by a diaphragm or piston 122 having a fluid or mechanical link 123 with another diaphragm or piston 125, controlled by a cam 126 driven by an electric motor 130. Alternatively the diaphragm 125 may be controlled manually, or automatically in accordance with a predetermined programme or the temperature, compositions or gauge of the workpiece.
