Abstract

832,132. Glazing, walls. PITTSBURGH PLATE GLASS CO. March 20, 1958 [March 29, 1957; Dec. 5, 1957], No. 8936/58. Classes 20(3) and 20(4) A glazing bar 60 used for the securing of glass panels 20 or spandrels 21 to the framework of a curtain wall is of the section shown in Fig. 12. The glass or spandrel is secured on the inturned flanges 76 by a clamping member 90 screwed into the flange 74 upstanding from the web 70. A cover 100 is snapped over the clamping member 90. In horizontal glazing bars only there is a longitudinal flange 82 extending from the web 70 and a drip flange 80 with a convex under surface depending from the flange 74. Drainage and ventilation holes 83, 84, 98, 106 and 107 are provided in the assembly and the surface of flange 74 may be slotted as at 81. Several modifications in the form of a flange 74 are described. The panel edge is covered with tape. Curtain walling is constructed on a frame work of vertical and horizontal box-section members 26, 50. The horizontal members 50 fit over and are secured to channel members 29 attached to members 26. Where it is required that the walling form a quadrilateral the end of a side wall of a member 50 is slotted so that the member may be slid into position over the channel member 29. Wood setting blocks 115 spaced horizontally on member 50 are covered with metal flashing 116 bent to form rear and side flanges 118, 122 and a front flange 117 overlapping the flange 82 of the glazing bar 60. Between the flanges rests a pad of heat insulating material 124 such as glass fibres bonded to masonry 30. The back of the pad is provided with a vapour barrier coating. The members 50 may be hidden by sheeting 131, 134 secured to ceiling and floor respectively. To permit expansion of the framework the vertical members 26 may be replaced (Fig. 6) by opposed channel members 27 bolted to angle brackets 31 secured to the masonry 30. The glazing bars are also modified as shown. To prevent ingress of water the gaps between the channel members are covered at one end by a strip 168 and at the other by a glazing compound 171.
