Abstract

1521501 Building frameworks; foundations; glazing J C KOTLARZ 20 Feb 1975 7225/75 Headings E1A E1J E1K and E1R A structural member such that an entire building structure can be assembled from a number of identical such members, comprises a hollow elongate rigid element including channel portions 12, 13 providing a pair of parallel longitudinal passageways on opposite sides of an interconnecting slot and a reinforcing member 34 coextensive with the length of and engaging the whole cross-section of the slot. One channel may have an open side opposite the slot closed by a separate panel and the member 34 may be solid or tubular as shown. A building framework may be formed by horizontally and vertically disposed groups of such members arranged in transverse relation with horizontal and vertical members abutting and fastened together by brackets located in the troughs formed between the walls of the channel members and the slots which preferably contains a solid bar at the bracket attachment point. Glass or plastics glazing such as window pane 85 or dome 87 may be secured in troughs between the channels by two-part neoprene gaskets 76, 79. The passageway on the inner side of the building may house the varied fluid-conducting pipe of a heating or cooling system while the passageway on the outer side may be lined with insulation. To improve the rigidity of the structure, cables secured to the foundation may pass upwardly through passageways in the columns on the outer facing side and along similar passageways in the roof crossmember, a turnbuckle joining cables from opposed columns being accessible through an open face of the passageway in the crossmember. Details of the mounting of the columns and of base members of the structure as well as the fastening of the cable to the foundation are described with reference to Figs. 5, 7, 8, not shown. Infill wall panels may be secured by two-part gaskets in the spaces between the columns and the other members defining the outer wall frame (Fig. 7). The lower passageway of the roof or ceiling crossmembers may locate a sprinkler system.
