Class 112 A method of producing parallel lines of zig-zag stitches comprises sewing a line 1 of zig-zag stitches in one direction, sewing a line 2 of straight stitches parallel to the first line and in the opposite direction, and sewing a second line 4 of zig-zag stitches in the first direction and overlying the straight stitches. For forming a buttonhole, barring stitches are added at both ends of lines 1 and 4. A presser foot adapted for use in the method is formed at its forward edge with a notch 11 for the passage of the needle 14, and in its lower surface 13 with a pair of parallel grooves 9, 10 which extend from the notch to the rear edge of the presser foot, the ridge 12 separating the grooves not extending to the surface 13 and one of the grooves being aligned with the neutral position of the transversely swingable needle. For the production of button holes in a button hole sewing machine the control cam is so constructed as to effect the above sequence of operations automatically, the barring stitches being produced at the beginning and end of the line 4 of zig-zag stitches.
