Abstract

A sewing machine for producing over-casting stitching has a table over which a textile work-piece passes beneath a stitching needle, and the table has an aperture into which the needle passes after the needle has penetrated the work-piece. At a position in front of the needle the aperture has a recess in which the first few stitches forming a chain can be accommodated at start-up so that when stitching into the work-piece commences this initial chain of stitches can be stitched into the work-piece to prevent unlocking of the stitches. The machine is used for stitching elasticated textile panels together for e.g. under-wear, night clothes, sweaters etc. The panels may be knitted e.g. jersey. The ends of lines of stitches do not have to be finished off in a separate process on a separate machine.
