1328701 Knitting COURTAULDS Ltd 19 April 1971 [31 March 1970] 15133/70 Headings D1C and D1K The body and sleeves of a garment blank are knitted integrally so that the wales of the fabric lie from waist to neck and down the sleeves by needles holding loops on the sleeve/ body line being progressively taken out of action and then progressively put back into action. A blank is knitted starting from the cuffs 19 as flat fabric e.g. 2x2 rib Section A on both beds of the machine after which previously inactive needles are introduced to produce an e.g. 1 x 1 rib and knitting of sleeves 21, 22 is continued and widened Section B. If the main part is single jersey, all loops are transferred to one bed. In Section C, shaping is continued at the edges of the sleeves but needles are taken out of action along fashioning lines 24a-d which meet the sleeve edges at points 25 where the sleeves meet the body fabric 26 and edges 27, 28, 29 are cast on. Panels 26a, b, c are knitted, Section D and the needles are gradually brought back into operation along lines 32a to 32d, three yarn carriers being used. Part 26 is then knitted and finished by a waist band 35 and some waste courses. The blank is folded in half and seamed along the shoulders. The waistband is turned up and hemmed or linked and the front edges provided with buttons and button holes. The sleeves may be knitted in one piece and part cut out to separate them. In another arrangement, Fig. 5, the blank is knitted from the cuffs and the sleeves are widened and then shaped at the top edges 64, 65 while needles are successively held on edges 67, 69 until course 72 is reached when portions are cast on for the body being shaped along edges 79, 80 while the needles are gradually taken in again along lines 76, 77. Body 78 is then completed and the waist band knitted. The garment is made up by joining edges 64, 65 to edges 79, 80 and then joining the under arm seams. A jumper blank may be knitted to be joined down one side and with two sleeves attached Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown) the latter requiring two secondary beds movable longitudinally. A parallel machine may be provided with an arrangement for forming a loop of yarn 300, Fig. 9, drawn from the package which is used to prevent tightening of the stitches when the feeder runs beyond the edge of the fabric.
