Abstract

1309239 Knitting COURTAULDS Ltd 17 June 1970 [18 June 1969] 30866/69 Heading DIK A blank for a knitted sleeved garment has front and rear upper body portions 6 knitted flat with their edges joined to the shoulder regions of the sleeves 7, 8 which have extensions 17, 18 to be joined to the upper edges of the front and rear upper body portions. In making the blank on a flat V-bed machine, the sleeves 7, 8 are knitted beside the body, e.g. sleeves 8 is knitted on auxiliary needle beds 24, 25. A vertical joint is formed by knitting the upper parts 6 of the body separately on the main beds of the machine meanwhile transferring stitches from the auxiliary beds one at a time until the vertical join is complete. The extensions 17, 18 are then knitted successively as U-shaped courses on auxiliary beds 24, 25, the stitches of the upper body parts being taken in at the ends of the courses as the beds 24, 25 are moved inwardly. Extensions 17, 18 can be knitted simultaneously by transferring the stitches inwardly on the auxiliary beds which are moved outwardly, e.g. on a machine as described in Specification No. 1,048,322 with transfer needles. Alternatively a machine having transfer elements for the loops can be used. The sleeve extensions and top edges of the upper body portion may be joined by seaming or linking instead of being knitted together. In modifications, the join 13 instead of being vertical may start horizontal or inclined, Fig. 2 (not shown) or may be entirely inclined, Fig. 3 (not shown). In a further arrangement, Fig. 6, the upper body portions are narrowed as the shoulder regions and extensions are knitted on a single pair of auxiliary beds on which the sleeves are knitted initially. The neck is cut out and finished to complete the garments.
