Abstract

831,029. Exhaust-silencers. COOMBS, R. S. Jan. 30, 1958, No. 3202/58. Class 7(2) A tube 15 connected to the engine exhaust pipe 16 has a welded-on flange 17 removably mounted by nutted bolts 18 to a cylindrical silencer casing 10 having an exit throat 13 and into which a part of the tube 15 having perforations 20 over its wall and closed end projects for less than half of the cylindrical length of the casing. The end perforations are closer together than the wall perforations so as to occupy a greater proportion of the respective surface. The total area of the perforations 20 is at least equal to the crosssectional area of the tube 19 and preferably 50% greater. The bolts 18 have their heads welded to the casing 10. In use on a motor vehicle a funnel 25 and tube 21 may lead air to a venturi 23 discharging at the throat 13, or the tube 21 may be extended so that the tunnel 25 is disposed adjacent the rear of the engine cooling fan.
