889,592. Exhaust-silencers. SPIEGEL, P. Dec. 6, 1960, No. 41985/60. Class 7(2). A pipe 2 connectible to an I.C. engine exhaust pipe at 3 has holes or slots 13 through which exhaust gases flowing in the pipe are entrained by air moving at a greater speed in an expansion chamber 4 between entry and exit pipes 12, 16. As applied to a motor vehicle, a scoop 17 facing the direction of vehicle motion forces air via a pipe 18 into a compression chamber 11 supplying the pipes 12. In a modification, the pipe 12 is central of the chamber cross-section, there are a plurality of exit pipes 16, and the scoop 17 is replaced by a remotely located and off-set scoop connected to a cylindrical chamber 11 by long pipes 18 and into which air is forced by the vehicle radiator fan or an electrically driven fan.
