Abstract

825,821. Vehicle couplings. VAILLANT, J. Dec. 18, 1957, No. 39308/57. Class 103(5) A semi-trailer coupling comprises a hemispherical bearing bowl 3 mounted to tilt in a fore and aft direction in bearings 1 on the tractor, a hemispherical casing 5 attached to a platform 7 and a housing 6 receiving a coupling and resting within the bowl 3, resilient oscillation dampers 23. 24, a connecting bolt 9 with spherical seating washers 10, 12 and a block 11 having a part 15 slidable in a slot 4 in the bowl 3 and an upper part having curved surfaces 18, 19 rotatable between pieces 18a, 19a fitting within a slot 8 in the casing 5. The coupling is assembled by passing the bolt 9 through the slot 4 so that the base 15 of the block 11 slides in the slot 4. The casing 5 is then positioned in the bowl 3 and the pieces 18a and 19a fitted into the slot 8 to surround the curved surfaces 18, 19 of the block. The washer 12 and nut 13 are then threaded on the bolt to secure the housing 6 to the casing 5 so that the platform 7 bears on the dampers. In operation the whole coupling can pivot fore and aft in the bearings 1, whilst transverse rocking of the casing 5 relative to the bowl 3 is permitted by sliding of the block 11 in the slot 4. Slight rotation of the casing 5 is also permitted between the curved surfaces 18, 19 of the block 11 and the surfaces 20a of the pieces 18a, 19a in the slot 8.
