Abstract

1,066,400. Castors. C. F. TOMS. March 31, 1966 [July 22, 1965], No. 31200/65. Heading A4U. A castor comprises a barrel shaped wheel 10 internally shaped to co-operate with an axle having a spherical, central bearing part 2 and conical side parts 1 whose free ends 3, 4 are secured within recesses 5 in a housing 7, and a pivot pin 8 having its axis at right angles to the wheel axle and extending through the centre of the bearing part 2, the conical recesses in the wheel 10 having an included angle which exceeds that of the conical parts 1 of the axle so that the wheel 10 has limited rocking freedom on the axle. The plastics wheels 10 are moulded on to a pair of metal shells 14 such that the flash passes through the abutment plane of the shells 14 to be received, and subsequently retained after breaking off, in a peripheral groove 13 in the bearing part 2. The pivot pin 8 may be secured either to the housing 7 or to a furniture mounting member.
