Abstract

830,303. Road vehicle couplings. VAILLANT, J. Dec. 17, 1957 [Dec. 4, 1957], No. 39159/57. Class 103(5) A fifth wheel coupling cradle 4 on a towing vehicle may tilt fore and aft on journals mounted in feet 1, 2, and provides an upper part cylindrical bearing surface 5 which may co-operate with a bearing surface 9 forming part of a platform 8 on which the trailer connection rests. The platform 8 is supported from the cradle 4 by resiliently compressible blocks 12, 13 which dampen lateral movements of the trailer and may compress under load until the surfaces 5 and 9 contact one another. A retaining member 15 secured to the underside. of the platform 8 bears against the under surface 5a of the cradle 4 and limits the extension of the blocks but allows the platform to swing. When the platform 8 is not under load the blocks 12, 13 lift it to the raised position seen at the left-hand side of Fig. 1.
