825,746. Thermally-actuated valves. MAIN WATER HEATERS Ltd. Jan. 4, 1957 [Jan. 4, 1956], No. 367/56. Class 135. A gas valve for a gas-fired water heater actuated by a bellows 22 filled with vapour or vaporizable liquid the pressure of which is arranged to vary with variations of temperature of the hot water, comprises a gas valve chamber 10 containing the gas valve and bellows, one end of which is fixed and the other end is arranged to operate the valve closure member 23, a water chamber 11 through which the outlet supply from the heater is arranged to flow attached to the gas chamber and separated therefrom by a partition 17 having an opening 20 communicating with the interior of the bellows, and an additional closed vapour container 21 of constant or adjustable volume in the water chamber, the interior of which container communicates solely with the opening in the partition. The additional container may house an insert 25 for determining its volume. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown), the effective surface area of the additional container is increased by forming a cup-shaped depression therein provided with a water baffle. In another modification (Fig. 2, not shown) the additional container is itself a bellows adjustable in capacity by a compression screw.
