Abstract

1488482 Heat pipes; storage heaters INDUSTRY SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 11 Oct 1974 [11 Oct 1973] 47545/73 Heading F4U A heating device comprises a closed vessel comprising, as shown, a lower cylindricalsection portion and an upper rectangular-section portion, the interiors 3, 2 of which are separated by a dividing wall 1, and containing a volatile heat transfer liquid. The two chambers 2, 3 are connected by a valve 4 and a chimney arrangement 9 extending upwardly from an aperture in the wall 1. The lower chamber 3 is provided with a container 7 which contains a thermal storage material, e.g. a salt which melts at an appropriate temperature and which can be heated electrically. In operation, on opening valve 4, liquid flows into the lower chamber 3 'where it is vaporized by the heater 7, the vapour passing up the chimney 9 and condensing on the walls of the chamber 2, the condensate flowing to the bottom of the chamber 2. The valve 4 may be controlled thermostatically. In a second embodiment, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the chimney 9 is replaced by a narrow tube (10) extending into both chambers and the valve 4 is located within the vessel and, when open, allows simultaneous downward flow of liquid and upward flow of vapour. When the valve is closed, any liquid in the lower chamber is forced through the tube into the upper chamber by vapour pressure in the lower chamber.
