Abstract
890,378. Thermally-actuated valves. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd., and SPIRAX-SARCO Ltd. May 1, 1959 [May 5, 1958], No. 14249/58. Class 135. [Also in Group XIII] In a steam trap, the flow of condensate through a chamber 2 from an inlet 5 to an outlet 6 is regulated by a valve 8 connected by a stem 9 to a bellows 1. A tube 11 containing the bellows 1 communicates through a tube 13 with a tube 12 in a chamber 3 open through holes 25 to the atmosphere external to a building heated by a system incorporating the device. The chambers 2, 3 are thermally insulated from one another by a gasket 4 and sealed from one another by a bellows 20. The tubes 11, 12 and the tube 13 contain a high flash point paraffin oil which expands if there is a rise in temperature of the air around the chamber 3 or of the condensate in the chamber 2. Connected in the space-heating system, the device releases condensate when required but also lowers the rate of space-heating, when the external tube 12 gets warm, by throttling the condensate discharge. To determine the temperatures at which the device acts, the position of the valve 8 and the tubes 11, 12 is adjusted by a nut 23. Excess expansion is taken up by a spring 14.
