Abstract
601,661. Thermally-actuated valves. WASDELL, W. K. April 27, 1944, No. 7945. [Class 135] [Also in Group XIII] In a hot water supply system in which a valve F controlling the supply of cold water from the bottom of a hot-water tank A to a boiler is controlled by means responsive to the temperature of the water in the tank so that at a pre-determined temperature the valve is opened to permit cold water to descend to the boiler, the temperature responsive means, which is a bellows H or other thermostatic capsule filled with water, an alcohol or a gas, is arranged in an extension pipe C<SP>1</SP> leading upwards from the valve F to the upper region of the hot water tank. In the form shown, the bellows H is connected by a rod M to the valve F. The tapered outlet of the valve housing N engages in the return pipe C, a rubber washer being interposed if desired, and the pipe C<SP>1</SP> is held upright by means of a loose shoe K pressed against the top of the tank by a screw J engaging in a lug L'. The pipe C<SP>1</SP> may be heat-insulated by a vulcanized rubber coating or by a double wall, the intermediate space being evacuated or filled with material of low heat conductivity. The valve seating may be rubber faced. A series of valves may be arranged to come into operation successively, the top one operating first and the bottom one last, and an extra valve may be provided at the top of the extension C<SP>1</SP>. The valve casing N may screw on to the pipe C. Specification 868/15, [Class 64 (i)], is referred to.
