Abstract

966,902. Valves. F. H. WATTS. Dec. 5, 1960 [Sept. 9, 1959], No. 30732/59. Heading F2V. An instantaneous gas-fired water heater incorporating a thermostatic control, comprises a fluid-filled thermostatic sensing element 16 in communication with a thermostat bellows 21 and inserted in the heated water flow, e.g. at the outlet 4 of the heat exchange element 15, and a flow control valve 18 operated by the bellows and connected in the water circuit to control the water flow in dependence on the heated water temperature, the bellows 21 being isolated from the pressure in the water circuit, as by a valve stem gland 24. With the object of controlling the outlet temperature under adverse conditions such as abnormally low gas pressure and exceptionally cold weather, the heater is supplied with water through a Venturi 1 which may be made sensitive by restricting the throat with a fitted rod or the like (not shown), and the water flow control valve, as shown, forms a by-pass across this Venturi. The pressure difference set up by the Venturi operates a diaphragm 7 controlling a gas valve 9.
