Abstract

1,022,631. Central heating systems. RADIATION Ltd. Oct. 11, 1962 [July 11, 1961], No. 25093/61. Heading F4U. In a central heating system in which hot water is pumped from a boiler burning fluid fuel, a first thermally operated switch S1 controls the fuel supply to the burner and the motor driven water pump over a predetermined temperature range, and a second thermally operated switch S2 controls the water pump only over a temperature range in which the lowest temperature exceeds the highest temperature of the range set on S1. For example, S1 may operate to open at 170‹ F. and close at 165‹ F.; S2 may operate to open at 190‹ F. and close at 185‹ F. Thus S1 terminates heat input to the boiler and de-energizes the burner 6 at 170‹ F. Due to the thermal capacity of the boiler, the water temperature will rise to 190‹ F. at which temperature S2 opens and operates pump 6. The pump will continue to operate until the water cools to 185‹ F. when S2 will close. At 165‹ F. S1 is closed and energizes the coil 7 of an electromagnetic valve in the fuel supply line, and the pump 6 to recommence heating the boiler and circulating the water. Switches S1, S2 are both operated by a thermally responsive element exposed to the heat of the water leaving the boiler. The system may include other elements such as a thermal device responsive to ambient temperature changes operating a switch S3 in series with S1. There may also be a clock-operated switch in series connection with S1.
