706,866. Heating water; hot-water boilers. KENDON, O. M. Sept. 5, 1951 [Sept. 7, 1950; Aug. 15, 1951], No. 21005/51. Class 64(1) A water heater comprises a cylinder 1 to hold water at a pressure which is above atmospheric and is controlled e.g. by a pressure relief .valve 14, a water inlet 4 the flow through which is restricted e.g. by a manually operated valve 6, to prevent incoming water from unduly cooling the water in the cylinder, an electric, gas, or other heater 12 which is controlled by a thermostat 13 so as to heat the water to a temperature above 212‹F but below its boiling point at the pressure to which it is subjected, and controllable discharge means including a pipe 9 through which water in the cylinder can be discharged by the steam pressure generated in the cylinder. The cylinder is also provided with a non-return valve 16 to admit air if the internal pressure falls unduly low, and a manually operated valve 17 for releasing air when the cylinder is first filled. The valves 14. 17 may discharge into a pipe 15 leading to the outlet pipe 9. The non-return and pressure relief valves may be combined in one valve, or replaced by an open vent-pipe. A pressurereducing valve 5 is provided in the inlet pipe 4. A water gauge may be provided. Water may be supplied to the cylinder by a controllable pump; in this case the valves 5 and 6 may be dispensed with. A gas-heated water heater, Fig. 3 (not shown), is provided with a central frustoconical flue having a thermostatically controlled gas burner at the bottom and in its upper part a conical shield supported by radial rods secured together and passing through bayonet slots in the top of the shield.
