Abstract

607,472. Water heating systems. WHITAKER, A., and JESSEL, R. Feb. 5, 1946, No. 3642. [Class 64(i)] In a water - heating system with a primary source of supply of heated water, e.g. a solid fuel boiler, hot water storage tank, and an auxiliary gas operated water heater, interposed between that primary source and the delivery point of the system, and bye-passed by a water passage, a valve in the bye-pass passage is operated by a thermally responsive element influenced by the temperature of. the water in the delivery section to permit more water to bye-pass the auxiliary heater when the temperature of the water in the delivery section exceeds a pre-determined value. Water from the primary hot supply flows through pipe 14 to the auxiliary water heater coil 11 and the control chambers 18 and 20 to the outlet pipe 16. The bye-pass 14a directly connects the pipe 14 and the chamber 20 which contains a thermally responsive bellows containing ether which actuates a valve controlling the opening from the bye-pass. The gas flow to the burner 13 is controlled by a temperature actuated valve in the chamber 18 which is divided by a partition into two compartments through one of which the gas flows and through the other of which the water flows. The water compartment contains a double metallic bellows (a single may be used) which is fixed to the partition between the gas and water sections and operates the valve. If high water pressures are used in the system the bellows are not exposed directly to the water but are each connected by a tube to a strong ether phial of brass or other metal located in the water pipe. The gas supply to the burner is also controlled by the rate of water flow through the heater 11 so that when the bulk of the water is bye-passed through the pipe 14a the supply of gas to the burner 13 is cut off and the heater becomes inoperative.
