Abstract

824,206. Digging root-crops. BOSWELL, J. H. May 27, 1958 [Feb. 28, 1957], No. 6741 /57. Class 6(3). A root-crop digging machine comprises a frame 1 having coupling means 2 for attachment to a tractor power-lift linkage and three cutter members 3, 4, 6 arranged in series, the first and third cutters being rotatable about vertical axes and the second being rotatable about a horizontal axis and being mounted on a vertically-adjustable portion 5 of the frame. The first cutter 3 comprises a drum with horizontal blades 7 mounted on an axle 8. The second cutter 4 comprises horizontal knives arranged in a reel on a shaft 11 journalled in the part 5 which is pivoted at 15 on the main frame and upwardly urged by a spring 16. Arcuate feelers 14 surround the cutter reel. The third cutter 6, which runs beneath the soil and tails the crop, comprises a scalloped dished disc on a shaft 23. A vertically-adjustable groundwheel 19 adjusts the height of the machine as a whole, the wheel being operable through linkage 21, 22. Guides 9 are mounted below the first cutter to guide haulms thereto. The cutters are driven by a jointed shaft 13 connected to the tractor (not shown).
