Abstract
968,541. Beet topping machines. J. D. DYSON, and C. R. DYSON. March 28, 1962 [Dec. 29, 1960], No. 44660/60. Heading A1F. A beet topping machine comprises a feeler drum associated with a knife whose blade is arranged, in the cutting operation, to travel transversely of the machine. A feeler drum 1 is mounted on the frame 5 of a machine by a pivoted arm 3 which also supports two plates 29 to which are fastened by pin and slot connections further plates 27 which support a frame 25 rotatably mounting a shaft 19 of a disc cutter 21. The drive for the cutter is taken through the bevel gears 37, 39 from either the land wheels or the powertake-off of the tractor. The feeler drum may be driven from the drive for the cutter or from the land wheels or the power-take-off of the tractor. To provide further adjustment for the cutter with respect to the feeler drum the plates 27 may be secured to the frame 25 by pin and slot connections thus allowing the cutter to be adjusted for height and angle of cut and also to be tilted transversely of the machine. Scrapers may be associated with the discs of the feeler drum and rotary flails 23 attached to the shaft 19 of the cutter discharge the tops from the machine. In an embodiment, Fig. 5, the cutting disc is replaced by an endless band 71, a tray 89 being provided to guide the tops to a flail 87.
