Abstract

1,272,230. Flail mower. JOHN WILDER Ltd. 27 Feb., 1970 [29 Nov., 1968], No. 56733/68. Heading A1F. [Also in Division A4] A mower of the interchangable flail type which can also be used to chop straw comprises frame members 1 and 2 mounted on wheels and carrying a horizontally mounted rotor 6 driven through gearbox 4 from a tractor P.T.O. On rotor 6 are mounted four rods 7 arranged at the extremities of two perpendicular diameters of the rotor which carry flail blades pivoted on axes eccentric to the rotor so they can move to a radial position. Deflector plate or casing 8 partially surrounds the rotor at a fixed distance. Stator blades 10 are mounted on interceptor bars 11, 12. When used for straw chopping the flails used are rectangular, the tips being one inch from plate 8 and pass between stator blades 10. Vertical crop deflectors 13 are mounted on frame so as to diverge from a point forward of rotor 6. When used for hay cutting the flails used are curved and the tips are four inches from plate 8, and the stator blades are swung away from rotor 6. Hood 16 is removably attached rearward of the rotor 6 and has angularly adjustable swath deflectors 17 converging towards a point rearward of rotor 6. The rotor speeds suitable for straw chopping or hay mowing, e.g. 1250 and 800 r.p.m. respectively, are selected by changing pulley 32 for one of a different diameter, and providing another belt 35 of corrected length to restore the relative position between pulleys 31 and 32.
