633,207. Cutting vegetation. WOOLFENDEN, J. H. Nov. 21, 1947, Nos. 30888/47 and 31824/48. [Class 6(iii)] A machine for cutting potato haulms and like vegetation comprises a pair of cutting discs 16 rolling edgewise on the ground to cut the vegetation followed by a multibladed cutter 24 rotating in a housing 23 and adapted both to chop the cut vegetation and to blow the cuttings laterally, means being provided for guiding the vegetation into the path of the cutter 24. This means comprises a pair of skeleton cones 19 mounted on the dished inner sides of the discs 16. The machine frame in cludes tool-bars 12, 13 carried by longitudinals 10 and carrying adjustable brackets 15, 17, for the, discs 16 and for travelling wheels 14. The housings 23 are mounted on longitudinal members 42 carried by the tool-bars 12, 13. The spindles 25 of the cutters 24 are driven from the tractor by flexible shafting 37 and belt drives 30, 31, 32. In modifications, the cones 19 are omitted and the vegetation is guided to the cutters 24 by discs carrying pins on their faces, by driven spiders, or by fixed guides. In the latter case, flat, vertical. cutting discs co-operate with fixed shoes which extend rearwardly to form guide surfaces. The housings 23 are open at the front and terminate rearwardly in laterally-driven discharge openings 28. The openings may, if desired, communicate with a receptacle.
