A verge trimmer comprises a motor-driven rotary blade cutter of the type operating without a ledger blade, a front guide member 45 and means for raising and lowering the guide member and the rotary cutter into or out of their respective operative positions. The drive from the motor is transmitted to the rear roller 4 through V-belts 6, pulleys 7 fixed to a main shaft 8, a V-belt 9, a counter-shaft 10 having a cone clutch mechanism 11-14 and a V-belt 18. The clutch is operated by an arm 15 mounted on a bracket 16 and connected to a Bowden cable 16a. The drive to the rotary cutter is from the main shaft 8 projecting beyond the frame 3 and carrying a movable hub 21 which supports a hollow member 22. An arm 23, which projects into the member 22, carries an axle on which is a rotatable sleeve 24 connected via pulleys 26 and 27 and a V-belt 25 to the main shaft 8. The rotary cutter, comprising a disc 28 to which are bolted four reversible cutting blades 29, is rivetted to the sleeve 24. The blades 29 are at right angles to each other and project beyond the edge of the disc. The hub 21 also carries an operating handle 30 and an arm 35 pivotally connected to a link 36 which through a pin 39, an arm 38, a rotatable spindle 37, a fixed sleeve 40, an arm 41, and a rod 44 controls the guideplate 45. The operating handle 30 has a spring- loaded detent 31 co-acting with recesses 33, 34 in a quadrant 32. When the detent is in recess 33 the rotary cutter and guide-plate are lowered into the operative position, and when the detent is in recess 34 they are withdrawn. Additional recesses may be provided in quadrant 32 to vary depth of cut. If desired, the front guide mechanism may be controlled by means of slotted links.
