Abstract

796,962. Turf-working machines; grasscutting machines. MASCARO, T. C. Oct. 13, 1955, No. 29153/55. Classes 6(1) and 6(3). A turf-working and grass-cutting machine comprises a frame 11 supported by driving wheels 13 and carrying a cutter-assembly 25 consisting of a transverse shaft 24 on which are mounted blades 92, 94 normal to the shaft, the cutting edges of these blades being turned out of the planes of the blades to lie in planes which cut the shaft axis at acute angles. The blades which are sharpened at their extreme ends 97, Fig. 3, are arranged in series, 92, 94, each series being circumferentially displaced relatively to the others. A motor 32 drives a layshaft 38 from which a belt drive 46 is taken to the cutter shaft 24 and a chain drive 52 is taken to a shaft 49 which drives the wheels 13 through belt drives 54, directly encircling the rubber tyres of the wheels 13 and pulleys 53 on the shaft 49. Both drives are independently disengageable through rods 68, 90 controlling respectively the position of the shaft 49 and a jockey pulley 89 bearing on the belt 46. The front of the machine is supported on a roller 28 carried by arms 26 pivoted to the side walls of the cover 17 of the cutter-assembly the roller being raisable by the movement of screwed rods 29. In a modification, Fig. 14 (not shown) build-up of cuttings within the cover is prevented by the provision of a blower, driven by the motor 32, and connected to the cover 17 by trunking, the airborne cuttings being ejected through vents in the side-walls. In a further modification, Fig. 18 (not shown), the cutter shaft is oblique to the line of travel and the cuttings are ejected forwardly into transverselyinclined channel extending across the front of the machine.
