Abstract
<PICT:0823900/III/1> An indirectly heated cathode core 4 is coated with emissive material conveyed to it by rotating it against a coated roller 12 which passes through a reservoir 2 of the coating substance; the coating process is terminated by blowing a stream of air through a duct 5, which strips the coating from the roller, thus avoiding the formation of a "seam" on the cathode coating. The roller 12 rotates in an opposite sense to that of the cathode core, and at a greater peripheral speed. The coating paste which may be, e.g. a suspension of an alkaline earth carbonate mixture in a solution of nitrocellulose, is continuously circulated through a system 9, 8, 6 to maintain a constant concentration. The cathode coating is also effected cataphoretically by applying a suitable potential difference between roller and cathode.
