787,926. Cathode materials and processing. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS, Inc. Aug. 30, 1955 [Aug. 31, 1954], No. 24913/55. Class 39(1). A cathode is coated with an emissive layer by a transfer of the layer from a flexible backing member on which it is initially formed. The backing member 10 may be thin metal, or calendered paper, and the coating applied by any usual method. It consists of a triple carbonate suspended in a binder, of which a number of alternative compositions are specified. A dual-density coating is preferred, a second, less dense, coating being added to the first. When required for use, the structure is cut up into strips 14, and then into separate leaves 16. The tubular cathode sleeve is wetted in a solution which will dissolve the binder, and then is laid on the leaf, as in Fig. 3. On contact, the coating comes away from the backing member, and wraps round the cathode, as in Fig. 4. Alternatively, the coating may be detached from the backing member first, and then the wetted sleeve laid on it ; or the sleeve may be laid on dry, and the liquid applied subsequently. The coating may be applied directly to a heater wire to form a directly heated cathode, or to the face of a flat button cathode. The coated backing member may be conveniently rolled up for storage, and is also suitable for use in automatic assembly.
