Abstract
798,505. Electroluminescence. THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. May 26, 1955 [July 2, 1954], No. 19520/54. Class 39(1). To permit the use of semi-conducting transparent coatings as electrodes in electroluminescent devices, the backing layer is divided into a plurality of mutually insulated portions. The latter may be a rectangular coating of lead dioxide divided by cutting or scratching along a zig-zag line K, Fig. 5, terminal strips S 1 , S 2 being provided along the edges. Division into an even number of portions is preferred and with four portions, two each may be connected to a terminal, Fig. 3 (not shown) or two are connected together and the other two across the supply. The semi-conducting coating may be of deflocculated graphite applied as a suspension by spraying, painting or flooding and lightly polished to improve its conductivity ; or it may be aluminium or silver applied chemically, by evaporation or by sputtering. Either the backing layer or the transparent semi-conducting layer may be next to the support, which may be of glass or flexible plastic and a wall or ceiling. A reflecting layer may be applied between the backing and luminescent layers. Specifications 798,503 and 798,504 are referred to.
