Abstract
821,060. Electric glass furnaces; ZEISSSTIFTUNG, C., [trading as JENAER GLASWERK SCHOTT & GEN.]. July 27, 1956 [July 28, 1955], No. 23323/56. Class 39(3) [Also in Group XXIII] A method of manufacturing glass in which a stream of glass flows in a substantially horizontal direction through a refining chamber, comprises heating the glass by passing current therethrbugh between electrodes, Fig. 3, contained in the chamber, which bound at least the lower half of the peripheral portion of the stream, the: remaining peripheral portion of the stream being heated by an upper electrode, Fig. 2, or other means e.g. hot gas, whereby the greater heating of the outer zone of the stream compensates for heat losses -therefrom and produces sub- .stantially uniform heating of the stream within the refining chamber, i.e. the temperature gradient is not more than 10-20‹C. The electrodes may be in the form of rods, Fig. 5, the current supply being adjustable to each rod individually or to each group of rods. A frame 8 of conducting or semi-conducting material may be provided, and is not connected to any electrode. The electrodes may be of U form open at the top.
