Abstract

646,179. Electrode furnaces. SOC. ANON. VETRERIA ITALIANA BALZARETTI MODIGLIANI. Dec. 31, 1947, No. 35366. Convention date, May 1, 1939. [Class 39(iii)] In an electric glass smelting furnace wherein the current traverses the molten mass, the temperature of the mass is increased in a zone between co-operating electrodes by adjustable means for reducing the cross sectional area of the molten mass in the said zone. The molten bath may be divided by a vertically adjustable wall 2b to restrict the flow of current to a narrow passage 6b at the bottom of the furnace. Glass rods 11 may be fed through the top of the furnace on to the wall 2b so that, on fusing, the glass will flow down both sides of the wall and provide a second current circuit. The electrodes 3b, 4b are preferably of steel with an internal cooling system. Orifices for drawing glass threads may be disposed below the narrow passage 6b. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also two tanks of molten material interconnected by a fluid glass film covering the surface of an elevated step between the tanks. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
