Class 85 A valve apparatus for incorporating in a tubing string to permit pressure testing of the string comprises tubular members 10, 21 a valve seat 12 on the member 10 and a valve member 13 movable in response to relative telescopic movement between the tubular members. An annular piston 18 fixed to the member 10 has a leg 17 on which the valve member is pivoted and slides in the cylinder 22 of the member 21. A well packer or other tool C is fixed to the member 21 and the member 10 is fixed to the string B which is lowered into the well, the valve member being in the open position shown in Fig. 2. The string is raised slightly and turned to release a finger 60 fixed to the piston from a depression 63 in a shoulder 62 on the member 21 so that the valve member may be closed. The string is lowered and the valve member is urged towards its closed position by the engagement of a projection 51 on the internal surface of the member 21 with the surface 50 of the valve member. When the string is in its lowermost position the valve member is pressed on to its seat by a shoulder 46 in'the member 21. The string is filled with test fluid at pressure, some of the passing through ports 32 to the space 33 above the piston. The valve is not opened by pressure, of fluid in the string since the area of the bore 14 is less than the area of. the piston.
