Abstract

819,493. Fluid pressure brakes. BULLEID, O. V. S. July 16, 1957 [July 16, 1956], No. 21979/56. Class 103 (1). A railway vehicle is provided with a self-contained individual braking equipment comprising its own electrically driven fluid pump 2, 3 and electromagnetically operated valves 9 and 10 by which brake applications and releases can be remotely controlled. As shown in Fig. 1, the invention is applied to a vacuum system in which the pump 2 driven by generator 3 normally maintains the upper chamber 12 continuously exhausted through non-return valve 11 and also exhausts the bottom chamber 13 through electromagnetically operated valve 9, 9a. During a brake application, the valve 9, 9a is closed and a further electromagnetically operated valve 10, 10a opens to allow entry of air from the atmosphere through a filter 7 to the bottom chamber 13. Valves 9, 9a and 10, 10a on similar equipment throughout the vehicles of a train are controlled by switches 9b and 10b on the locomotion or brake van. In an alternative embodiment small reservoirs are inserted in the lines between the pump 2 and the top brake cylinder chamber 12 and the air filter 7 and bottom chamber 13. The system may be operated by compressed air instead of vacuum.
