Class 141 A collar stiffener comprises an elongated strip of plastic sheet material permanently folded along one or more longitudinal lines. The folded strip may comprise three superimposed layers produced by folding the side portions 15a, 15b on to the central portion, either on the same face as in Fig. 9 or on opposite faces, Fig. 8 (not shown). In a modification, Fig. 5, the folded side portions are narrower so that they do not overlap. In a further modification, Fig. 6, the strip is folded along its central line. The stiffener is inserted in a pocket attached to the back ply of the collar and extending obliquely from the collar point, and is held therein by a transverse line of stitching across the upper end of the pocket. One or more rows of projecting burrs 17 produced by punching holes in the strip also help to hold the strip in position. The upper end of the stiffener is made more flexible than the rest by slitting along part of the fold-line 19, Fig. 10, or by making one layer of the strip longer than the others; the longer layer may project beyond the fold line of the collar. The plastic material constituting the strip is preferably a polyester film or nylon and may be coated with a silicone product.
