Abstract

816,907. Furnace electrodes. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. March 9, 1956 [March 11, 1955], No. 7386/56. Class 39(3) A cylindrical graphite electrode 10 for an electric arc furnace has a cross-sectional area of at least three square inches, and a cylindrical passage 11 therein has a cross-sectional area of between 0.1 per cent and 20 per cent of the cross-sectional area of the electrode. The passage 11 extends substantially the length of the electrode, and a diaphragm 12 is provided at the upper end remote from the electrode tip to prevent convection currents rising through it and causing rapid oxidation. A typical shape that the electrode may assume during operation is shown with the passage 11 gradually increasing at 13. The electrode may be in two sections joined by a threaded carbonaceous nipple 15 with a hole 16 extending to near one end to leave a diaphragm 17. The cross-sectional area of the hole 16 is from 0.1 per cent to 2 per cent of the cross-sectional area of the electrode.
