970,718. Arc furnace electrode holders. SOLUMETA. Feb. 16, 1961 [Feb. 17, 1960], No. 3189/64. Divided out of 970,717. Heading H5H. A gas-tight electrode holder for an arc furnace comprises a current inlet device containing a powdered electrically conducting and heatresistant material compressed into intimate contact with the electrode, a jack system fixed to the current inlet device and connected to the dome of the furnace, one clamp independent of the device, and another fixed to it, so that when the jack is rigid with the furnace it can displace the device lengthwise, with or without the electrode. In Fig. 1, metal sleeve 21, concentric with electrode 25 clamped at 26, is cooled by water in tubes 30, and has internal surface 22 of slight conical frustum shape. Current is fed in by tube 24 and lug 23. A mixture of powdered and lamellar graphite and/ or carbides of Ta, Ti, or Zr, is packed in space 27 by stuffing-box 29, which may be remotely controlled by a jack system, and is retained by one or more graphite rings 28. Current density is maintained by increasing surface of contact with the electrode. Fig. 2 shows a variable slope electrode holder on which sleeve 21 is lengthened by tube 31, having gas-tight seal 32 which can slide on water-cooled electrode guide 33. Guiding rings 34 and 37 (fixed to 33) allow sliding of the electrode as it is consumed. When pistons 36 of jacks 35 are at their lower stroke end, collar 39 is locked, and 26 opened, to enable the jacks to operate, and displace the holder upwards. The electrode slope may be varied by means of surface 40 which can slide over cooled base 42-42<SP>1</SP> having flexible joints 45- 45<SP>1</SP> and insulating seal 43, and which is fixed to dome 44.
