Abstract

756,582. Gasifying coal underground. MINISTER OF FUEL & POWER. Jan. 17, 1955 [Jan. 15, 1954], No. 1226/54. Class 55(2). In establishing a porous passage through a part of a coal seam by passing an electric current through it as a preliminary to gasification, air or other fluid under pressure, e.g. 75 lb. per sq. in. is applied to the seam for the whole or part of the period during which current is passing so as to drive off moisture and thereby reduce electricity consumption. A borehole 1 extending to a coal seam 3 is lined with pressure resistant, waterproof material 4. The lower end, at least, of the lining is of electrically non-conducting material. A tubular electrode 5 as of mild steel sheathed with copper is tipped with a perforated stainless steel tube 6 resting in a hole in the seam ; or it may be surrounded with graphite granules or other granular conducting material. The conductor tube is spaced and insulated from the lining by silica glass rings 7 and a supply cable 10 is clamped to it on the outer side of an insulating borehole cover 8 ; a conduit 12 also of insulating material connects it to a valve 11 whereby it may communicate either with a source of pressure air &c. or with an exhauster pump. The borehole may be sealed against the entry of gas, tar, steam, &c. by a concrete closure at the bottom. In a modification a header supplying compressed nitrogen &c. is fitted to the upper end of the borehole to keep the space round the conductor free from moisture and may be used for supplying the seam with pressure fluid the conductor tube being replaced by a rod. Air may advantageously be used initially and substituted by nitrogen or other inert gas as the temperature rises.
