To connect electrical leads 15, 16 to a gas reference solid electrolyte electrochemical cell including a thermo-couple forming electrode, and at the same time connect the gas supply from inlet 12 to the cell, leads 15, 16 and inlet 12 being arranged within fire-hook 1 for taking measurements inside a metal bath, a connecting device comprises a unit 2 slidable within the firehook, and a refractory rod 9 with four longitudinal conduits, two for gas and two for conductors, from the cell (Fig. 3, not shown), the conductors at the top end of the rod being bared so that when it is pushed through the hole in the bottom of unit 2 the conductors make contact with blade contacts 22, 23 connected to leads 15, 16 respectively, the assembly being rendered gastight by sealing rings 25 and 10 and a spring 36 under tension fixed to the bottom of cylinder 3 exerting a downward force tending to press the thermocouple against the electrolyte. Insulating member 19 acts as a stop for the refractory rod and is grooved to allow gas flow from inlet 12 into cavity 21 and thence through the gas conduits to the cell.
