Abstract

816,635. Sleeve couplings cable couplings. TATE, A. E. Aug. 7, 1957 [Aug. 10, 1956], No. 24612/56. Class 38 (1). In a connector of the kind comprising a sleeve which is crimped on to a conductor, the sleeve is formed from a metal different from that of the conductor and has a liner either of the same metal as that of the conductor or of a metal which produces negligible electrolytic action between it and the conductor, means being provided for effecting a moisture-proof seal between at least the outer end of the sleeve and liner. In Fig. 1 an aluminium sleeve 12 forming part of a jumper connector has a copper liner 14 closed at its inner end and screwthreaded at its outer end which projects from the sleeve. A resilient sealing washer 16 placed over the projecting end of the liner is compressed to seal the joint between sleeve and liner by nuts 18, 19 screwing on to said projecting end. Fig. 3 shows a sleeve connector for connecting a copper conductor 23 and an aluminium or aluminium sheathed conductor 21. A copper liner 24 receives the copper conductor and is sealed at its outer end as in the previous embodiment whilst the aluminium sleeve 20 engages directly the conductor 21. In the case where two copper conductors are to be joined (Fig. 4, not shown), a copper liner which extends throughout the length of the bore of the sleeve is provided, said liner projecting from both ends of the sleeve and being sealed at each end as before. Fig. 5 shows a modification of the construction shown in Fig. 3 wherein the liner instead of being screwthreaded has an enlarged head 26. Prior to compressing the sleeve on to the conductors 21, 23, the centre portion of the sleeve 20 is compressed to grip the liner 24, such compression causing axial expansion of the sleeve which compresses the washer 16 between the end of the sleeve and the head 26. Such a construction may be used in a tapping connector as shown in Fig. 6, wherein the half of the sleeve 20 containing the liner 24 and sealing means is attached to a conventional conductor gripping device 34. Specifications 601,670, 601,690 and 693,367, [both in Group XXII], are referred to.
