Class 64(1) When an indirectly-heated hot-water storage tank 10 is first filled, water from a cold supply tank enters through an inlet 11 and some of the water enters a skirt 15 on an annular heat exchanger 12 (connected by an inlet 13 and outlet 14 to a back boiler) to pass up a pipe 16 and fill the annulus until it reaches and closes the bottom end of a bent and constricted tube 17. When the storage tank 10 is filled to its top outlet, air is trapped in the bent tube 17 near its constriction 18 and in the top of the annulus 12 to isolate the annulus water from the storage water. Heating of the annulus water drives the air pockets into the short arm of the bent tube 17 and into the skirt 15. An immersion heater may be inserted in the storage tank 10.
