813,024. Printing on cylindrical surfaces. GUERCHET, P. F. June 17, 1957 [June 16, 1956], No. 19001/57. Class 100(2) Mechanism for printing on the surfaces of cylindrical articles 3, comprises a rotatably mounted distributer drum 4 having grooves 5 on its periphery for receiving articles to be printed, an arcuate guide 7 to retain the articles in the grooves over a predetermined arc of rotation, and a printing member 10 mounted within the drum for co-operation with the articles in succession as they reach printing position. The articles 3 to be printed, which may be phials of glass or of deformable material, are stored in a hopper 1 formed of converging walls 2, 2<1>. The articles drop into the grooves 5 and are brought by rotation of the drum 4 into printing position adjacent a yieldable pad 9 of rubber or foamed resin. The pad 9 is adjustable radially of the drum 4 by a plate 8 secured to the guide 7 by screws for varying the printing pressure. The printing roller 10, mounted within the drum 4, is driven through a gear, not shown, on the shaft of the roller 10. The roller 10 co-operates with a type roller 13 inked by a roller 14 engaging a roller 15 dipping in a trough 16. The rollers 13, 15, and 16 are driven through gearing, not shown, by the shaft of the roller 10. The speed of the roller 10 is selected by the gear ratio of the drive thereto so that the relative linear velocity between the roller 10 and the article 3 is substantially zero.
