A method of circular grinding elastomers and similar materials is characterized in that the ratio of the peripheral velocity of the grinding wheel to that of the material is greater than 500: 1. With elastomers of polyurethane or natural rubber, a ratio of 2000: 1 is preferred. In apparatus for carrying out the method on a workpiece consisting of two plastic cylinders 2 on a shaft, the workpiece is pressed against a driven roller 3 by a spring-urged arm 4, the roller and arm being mounted on a slide 6 for movement relative to a grinding cylinder 7. The peripheral velocity of the cylinder may be 25 m./sec. and that of the roller 3 be 0À013 m./sec., the cylinder rotating at 1200 r.p.m. and the roller at 2À5 r.p.m. The arrangement is such that the workpiece rotates in the same sense as the grinding cylinder. The method may be carried out in apparatus in which the workpiece rests on a stationary support and is driven by a feed disc, or the workpiece may be mounted between centres.
