A rod 1 is ground or polished by rotating it about its axis and feeding it axially into engagement with a grinding or polishing member 4, each momentary rod-engaging part of which is caused to move substantially parallel to the axis of the rod at a considerably greater speed than that of the axial advance of the rod and has a speed component which is directed subst antially perpendicular to the rod and is of substantially the same magnitude and disposed in the same direction as the circumferential speed of the rod at the contacting area; each part of the member 4 while in momentary engagement with the rod grinds or polishes along a path which is longer than the distance the rod is moved axially during each of its revolutions. The rod 1 is supported by a roller 2 and rotated by rollers 3 which are slightly skewed to feed the rod to the grinding member 4 which may be a disc or an abrasive belt passing over a contact wheel. Opposite the member 4 are supporting rollers 5 which may be replaced by a second grinding member acting similarly to the member 4. The above-mentioned speed component of the member 4 acting perpendicularly to the rod is provided by skewing the member 4 at a slight angle to the rod. If desired, the member 4 may be intermittently or continuously moved transversely across the rod during the operation and its width is then arranged to be greater than the diameter of the rod; alternatively, the rod 1 may be moved transversely relatively to the grinding member or the same effect obtained by moving both members.
