Abstract

1,167,819. Truing grinding wheels. CIMAT S.p.A. 27 June, 1968 [30 June, 1967], No. 30712/68. Heading B3D. A method of dressing a generally cylindrical grinding wheel 3 to form a predetermined concave profile thereon comprises rotating the grinding wheel about its axis and moving it in a longitudinal direction parallel to its axis, supporting a tool 5 for movement into and out of engagement with the wheel in a transverse direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the wheel, the transverse movement being controlled by a linear cam 21 which is inclined to the longitudinal direction and effects rocking movement of an eccentric cam 14 in dependence on the movement of the workpiece, the cam 14, in turn, moving a carriage 8 supporting the tool in the transverse direction. The tool, such as a diamond, is mounted in a tubular holder 6 carried by the carriage 8 and is movable about a horizontal pivot on the carriage between operative and inoperative positions. The carriage is mounted by leaf-springs 9 on a support structure 10 having bearings for a shaft 15 on which the eccentric cam 14 is secured. The cam has a hardened insert 14a engaging a roller 13 carried by the carriage to effect movement thereof upon rotation of the cam. Rotation of the cam is effected by a roller 20 which is mounted on a lever 17 secured to shaft 15 and is urged by a spring 18 into engagement with the linear cam 21 which is movable longitudinally with the grinding wheel whereby the tool 5 forms a concave profile on the grinding wheel which is used to form a convex surface on the inner track surface of the outer race of a conical or cylindrical roller bearing. In another embodiment, the linear cam is formed as a sector-shaped member 25 adjustable in an arcuate recess in a plate 22 by push-rods 33, 34 and screws 33a, 34a to vary the inclination of the cam surface 31 which has a hardened insert 26.
